60,424 Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled Over E. Coli Concerns

Posted on August 16, 2011

In a news release Friday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that National Beef Packaging Co., LLC is recalling ground beef products due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination.

The Dodge City, Kan., slaughter firm is recalling approximately 60,424 pounds of ground beef products including ground beef chubs produced on July 23, 2011 with a freeze by date of August 12, 2011, and ground beef chubs produced on July 25, 2011 with a freeze by date of August 14, 2011.

Products connected with the July 23 production date are boxes for 3-, 5-, and 10-pound chubs of National Beef 80/20 Fine Ground Chuck. Products connected with the July 25 production dare are boxes of National Beef 81/19 Fine Ground Beef, National Beef 90/10 Fine Ground Beef, and National Beef 86/14 Fine Ground Round. The establishment number “Est. 262” appears within the USDA mark of inspection on each of the affected boxes.

Important to note is that the products subject to recall were sent to distributors nationwide for distribution and/or further processing. The products listed in the recall notice may have been repackaged for consumer consumption and sold under different retail brand names. The FSIS will list retail distribution information, when its available, on its website

I hope that no one has been sickened as a result of consuming tainted beef. As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I encourage anyone who is concerned about this recall to look up retailer information on the FSIS website to learn if you may have purchased potentially contaminated beef. In general, it is a good idea to practice safe food handling habits when cooking.
