Airborne Beach Umbrellas May Overshadow Summer Fun

Posted on August 18, 2011

An idyllic beach vacation is a summer tradition for many people; however while enjoying a seaside holiday, there are safety concerns to be considered, specifically from umbrellas that may have become airborne, kicked up by strong ocean breezes, report news sources.

It seems that flying umbrellas can cause injury. A search of the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s database revealed 31 complaints involving beach umbrellas between 2004 and 2009. Most of the injuries reported involved lacerations, contusions/abrasions, or internal organ injuries. Lawsuits have arisen from airborne umbrellas. A New York woman was awarded $200,000 after an incident at a state park beach a beach when a umbrella took flight and struck her in the temple.

One way to help keep an umbrella earthbound is to employ a beach umbrella sand anchor. They allow for a user to get the umbrella pole deep in the sand. In the event of high winds, the best option is to take the umbrella down.

I hope that beach goers this year are able to avoid any airborne umbrella incidents and injuries. As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I encourage vacationers to practice safe travel habits while away from home to ensure safety while away and happy, fun memories once returning home.
