Research Ties Raw Dough To E.coli Outbreak

Posted on December 13, 2011

According to news sources, researchers have found a link between a recent multi-state E.coli outbreak and raw cookie dough commonly found in many grocery stores nationwide.

The researchers recently published their findings in the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal after they found a causal link between a recent outbreak of E.coli in 2009 and ready-to-bake cookie dough. The culprit ingredient seems most likely to be the “raw” flour used in cooke dough since it reportedly does not pass through the rigorous process of killing pathogens such as eggs, sugar or molasses.

The Center for Disease Control has reportedly recommended that manufacturers create these pre-packaged cookie dough products in a way that is actually ready-to-eat. The CDC also recommended that increased consumer education in regards to the risks associated with eating raw cookie dough was necessary to keep people safe.

About 77 people became ill in the 2009 E.colli outbreak.
