Wardley Advanced Nutrition Perfect Protein Tropical Flake Fish Food has been voluntarily recalled by its manufacturer, the Hartz Mountain Corporation of Secaucus, New Jersey, because of a risk of salmonella contamination.
An unknown number of units of the one ounce variety of this fish food may have come in contact with the foodborne organism Salmonella, known to trigger severe and possibly deadly infections in those with weakened immune systems, as well as children and the elderly.
Animals eating the product can become infected, as well as pet owners who come into contact with it in the course of feeding their fish. The risk for infection becomes significantly higher if the pet owner fails to wash his or her hands after handling the fish food.
The symptoms of salmonella include: stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
