Casillas v. Landstar Ranger, Inc. Recognized By Daily Journal As A 2015 Top Verdict By Dollar

Panish | Shea | Ravipudi LLP’s $34,555,220 jury verdict against Landstar Ranger, Inc. for a man who was severely injured when he was run over by a tractor-trailer while stopped on the sidewalk was recognized by the Daily Journal as one of 2015’s Top Plaintiff’s Verdict by Dollar.  Only 10 California verdicts received this honor.

19-year-old Alan Casillas had his lower left leg amputated after he was hit by a tractor-trailer that was attempting to make a right turn in downtown Los Angeles and crossed over the sidewalk where Casillas was standing. Following the accident, the once active young man went from participating in activities such as biking and swimming to relying on the aide of his relatives to get him up and down the stairs in the family’s two-story home. A manual laborer without a high school diploma, Casillas’ loss of his leg made him virtually unemployable.

Panish | Shea | Ravipudi LLP attorneys Brian Panish, Thomas Schultz, Deborah Chang and Erika Contreras represented Casillas at trial. Casillas was also represented in the case by attorneys H. Sean Banafsheh, Kevin Danesh and Raphael D. Javid of Banafsheh, Danesh & Javid PC.

The Daily Journal’s article highlights how Panish | Shea | Ravipudi LLP attorneys told the story of the Casillas family and how their dreams for their son were shattered by his injury. Although the defense initially attempted to hold Casillas partially responsible for being inattentive, Brian Panish’s opening statement detailed the design of the roadway and explained how Casillas was stopped on the sidewalk as the truck attempted its turn, leading Landstar to admit negligence soon thereafter.
