1 Million Pounds of Ground Beef Products Recalled Due to E. Coli Contamination
Valley Meat Company located in Modesto, California has recalled 1 million pounds of frozen ground beef patties and bulk ground beef products because of a possible E. coli outbreak. The U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that seven illnesses have been reported due to E. coli linked to the recalled beef products.
The recall was announced on August 6 but the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) was informed about a small E. coli O157:H7 cluster of illnesses with a rare strain on July 15 by the California Department of Public Health.
The recalled beef products were produced on various dates between October 2, 2009 and January 12, 2010. Since these products are likely to have been frozen by consumers, the FSIS has advised purchasers to check for ground beef products in their freezers and discard any of the recalled products, which were distributed to providers in California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and internationally, as well as to a California company for additional processing.
E. coli can potentially be deadly since the bacterium can lead to dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and in the most severe of illnesses, intestinal distress or kidney failure. The elderly, children, and those with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to food-borne illness’ more severe risks.
