What Is Vaping?

Vaping refers to using an electronic device to inhale aerosols. The aerosols generally contain nicotine, flavoring and various chemicals – some of which scientists have confirmed are carcinogens. The chemicals in vaping cartridges have also been linked to serious health complications such as heart disease and respiratory problems. JUUL is a popular type of vaping device, especially among younger users. The e-liquid used in JUUL devices contain about 5% nicotine. This is more than twice the amount of nicotine as other leading e-cigarette and vape brands. Just one JUUL pod has about the equivalent of an entire pack of cigarettes.

Vaping Statistics

Vaping has grown quickly in popularity over the last several years. A survey of 44,000 high school students by News in Health found that 37% of seniors vaped in 2018, up from 28% in 2017. The discreet shape may have contributed to the popularity of JUUL devices in particular since they are easier for teens to hide.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 99% of e-cigarettes sold in the US contain nicotine, despite many advertisements implying they are safer than cigarettes. Using nicotine at a young age comes with a higher risk of nicotine addiction and smoking cigarettes in the future. Yet 66% of teens surveyed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse said they believed their vaping devices contained only flavoring and no nicotine.

Injuries Caused By Vaping

Vaping devices pose more risks than just nicotine addictions. Researchers have connected JUUL and other vaping devices to serious respiratory illnesses such as popcorn lung (bronchiolitis obliterans) and EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping produce use-associated lung injury). EVALI has taken 68 lives as of February 2020. They could also increase the risk of certain cancers due to the various chemicals contained in the cartridges. Furthermore, vaping could lead to trauma-related injuries if the device’s lithium-ion battery overheats. Vaping-related fires and explosions have led to catastrophic user injuries such as third-degree burns, facial injuries and amputations.

Recent medical studies also show that vaping is linked to a much higher risk of COVID-19 among teenagers and young adults. The damage that the lungs have suffered from vaping could lead to experiencing more severe COVID-19 symptoms.
